Our Story

Shake the Tree Kenya is a small eco-cottage industry operating in its sixth year. We create purposeful and versatile vocations for a group of single mothers through up-cycling second-hand clothes. The brand was founded by mother and daughter Barbara and Khadia Tyack, who combined their shared interest in fashion, thrifting and creating new projects.

We believe there is no need to buy new clothes when mountains of beautiful discarded garments exist. So taking this as an opportunity, we have chosen to create our designs from garments found at the 'mitumba' markets around Kenya. Our innovations are art pieces and comfortable everyday wear, suitable for everyone.

We thrive on transparency in our production as our ultimate goal is to leave positive peace prints on our one and only planet.

Each of our pieces takes a journey towards a new future.  First, travelling from the country, they departed to the Kenyan mitumba and then through the hands of the different talents that work in tandem at Shake the Tree to carry our creations into existence.

#WeMadeYourClothes

The fashion industry remains one of the world's most labour-intensive enterprises, with most of the labour carried out predominantly by women earning less than a living wage. We at Shake the Tree stand by the #WhoMadeMyClothes campaign, as the production of our garments is the result of a combined effort. Over the past six years, we have seen the woman we employ lives change for the better. At the same time, it has instilled a sense of pride in everyone for the designs they helped curate.
